Belgravia Green Edmonton, AB

The ultimate performer in a project that includes three custom homes, the Belgravia Green achieves the coveted Net Zero Energy status. A Net Zero Energy home is one that produces as much energy as it consumes, meaning that optimizing all components for low energy use is critical. This low energy use is then countered by a photovoltaic solar array that generates the energy needed for the home and its occupants. The contemporary design allows the array to blend in, setting it back from the forefront to allow other architectural features to dominate. An upper patio offers an additional entertaining area, with full view of the park space that’s just across the street. Through the wall of windows, solar energy enters the home, captured and released by the mass of the decorative polished concrete floors and dark concrete countertops, providing one third of the home’s heat energy requirements. The abundance of light not only reduces artificial lighting requirements but also highlights the warmth of the quarter-sawn oak cabinets and solid fir staircase. A winner of awards from multiple organizations proves that care in planning can take the importance of reducing ecological impact and blend it with the warm atmosphere of pleasurable design

Westbrook House Edmonton, AB

This home epitomizes the meaning of the word solid. Every detail in this home has been tailored to meet our client's desire for everything to look, feel and, more importantly, be substantial. Solid design- NewStudio Architecture has created a home that offers clean Contemporary design, born from original vision. Blessed with a location that features a very unique unobstructed view of Whitemud Ravine, one can appreciate this beauty from all spaces within the house. Multiple outdoor decks and patios are easily accessed to encourage outdoor living. Solid structure- Due to geotechnical challenges, precise engineering input and Effect's building expertise was required to ensure a properly built foundation on which a structure could be built that could stand the test of time. Our client's insistence that the home be thoroughly sound led us to the use of structural reinforced concrete exterior walls, floors and roof. Insulating concrete forming systems were used to meet the challenges of creating a highly insulated, structurally superior building. Solid performance- Ultimate efficiency is achieved by using innovative products, high insulation levels, and careful detailing to ensure reduced thermal bridging and minimal air leakage. Heating and cooling needs are satisfied using both heating and cooling pipes installed in the insulated concrete floors, with an air delivery system to satisfy peak heating and cooling demand and fresh ventilation air delivery. All exterior walls have an additional framed wall installed to provide a space to add extra insulation. Windows and doors all have tilt/turn capability and were carefully selected based on their extremely high performance glazing and frame specifications. By using efficient building techniques and capturing passive solar energy, Energuide has certified that this home will use only 30% of required energy to operate a similar home using industry standards.

This home reflects the active homeowners' love of the outdoors. The tasteful use of wood and brick gives the home an atmosphere that allows one to feel as if you've escaped to a mountain lodge. With a barrier free shower on the Main Floor, the home was designed for "aging-in-place", where the rooms are easily transformed should mobility become increasingly difficult. The ICF concrete exterior walls keep the home quiet and, combined with the geothermal heating system, make the home a premium energy saving performer.
